Southern Home Security can not be…

Southern Home Security can not be trusted. As a technician, I have worked in the industry since 2020 and I have never seen such poor leadership. They will send out the tech to do work but find a reason to keep the money for themselves. Customer accounts had wrong names, telephone numbers and improper equipment. Any mistakes or problems, the technician is liable. Promises are made to get what they want and when it sounds too good to be true, you can believe it is. I highly recommend avoiding Southern Home Security at all costs.

What are the disadvantages of smart plugs?

Smart plugs offer convenience, but setup and integration may be tricky for some users. It requires accessing outlets, unplugging current devices, and ensuring connection.

What should you not plug into a smart plug?

Avoid plugging in:

High-Power Appliances: Devices like space heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, or any large appliances exceeding the smart plug’s maximum load (typically 13 amps) to prevent overheating or damage.

Devices with Motors: Items like refrigerators or washing machines can cause surges that may harm the smart plug.

Sensitive Electronics: Devices requiring a stable power supply (e.g., medical equipment) may not function properly with a smart plug, as they can introduce fluctuations.

Do smart plugs use electricity when off?

Yes, smart plugs consume a small amount of electricity even when turned off, but the amount is usually minimal.

Do smart plugs work when internet is down?

Yes, many smart plugs, like the Qolsys smart plug offered by Southern Home Security, can still operate locally without an internet connection. You can manually control them or use a connected Z-Wave hub that doesn’t require internet access.

Can smart plugs interfere with Wi-Fi?

Smart plugs usually do not interfere with Wi-Fi networks, as they use Z-Wave technology, which operates on a different frequency. However, if multiple devices use the same frequency bands, there could be some interference, but this is usually minimal.

Can I use my own smart home device?

Yes. Since the Southern Home Security system can integrate up to 120 different Z-Wave smart home devices, including smart plugs from well-known brands like Lutron and Leviton, you can add the device you already own.
